“This is our second year for the poster contest,” explained Delores Blount, Director of the Pawleys Island Festival of Music & Art, “it has gained popularity among our art community rapidly and has become a showcase of the true artistic talent of the Lowcountry.”

The annual contest also features a student division, allowing for entries from area schools. This years contest featured two category winners:
Grade 9th – 12th: Luke Horowitz , “Unlock Your Media”
8th Grade & Under: Josslyn Hair, “Sea Notes”

The painting, ‘Marsh March’, by Pawleys Island artist Witzel, has been selected for use in all 2012 promotional materials for the Pawleys Island Festival of Music & Art.

The festival known for being an advocate of bringing top-notch music and art to the community has a track record of providing experiences and opportunities to local students. However, this is the first scholarship that the Pawleys Island Festival of Music and Art has ever endorsed.

In September 2010, the festival opened the “Remembering Kathy Metts Exhibit” at the Cheryl Newby Gallery, which showcased the original works of the dedicated artist. Now, the festival has established this scholarship in Metts’ honor. “Kathy’s paintings reflect an excitement for life and family, and I can’t think of a better way to honor her than through this scholarship,” said Delores Blount, Executive Director.

The Kathryn Bryan Metts Scholarship is only available to upper-level (junior, senior or graduate) students who are specializing in painting and drawing at a post-secondary institution. They must also be a native or present resident of Georgetown County, SC or Alamance County, NC.

The deadline to apply for the Kathryn Bryan Metts Scholarship is 5:00 PM, Friday, June 15, 2012.

The Wearable Art Luncheon is all about fashion, food, fun, and shopping! A strolling fashion show will feature the hot new trends as well as wearable art and jewelry from local artists. You can shop for unique art, jewelry, hats, scarves and fabulous gifts in the silent auction. A portion of the proceeds will go to benefit the Kathy B. Metts Visual Arts Scholarship and the Pawleys Island Festival of Music and Art.

In late 1966, at age 24, came the opportunity of a lifetime to join the Muddy Waters Band and help shape the electric blues sound that inspired the rock and roll movement of the late 60’s and early 70’s. Regular guests of the band included Eric Clapton, Paul Butterfield, Mike Bloomfield, and Elvin Bishop. The Muddy Waters Band (as a unit) shared the stage with the likes of Howlin’ Wolfe, Elmore James, Jimmy Reed, Junior Wells, Big Joe Williams, and Big Mama Thornton just to name a few. During this time, Mac played on John Lee Hooker’s “live “album, Live at the Café Au Go-Go, as well as Otis Spann’s classic recording “The Blues is Where It’s At”.

With its virtuosic performances, Fireworks has led the charge to bring a fresh perspective to established audiences, and to create a thrilling experience for new generations of listeners beyond the concert hall. Fireworks defies convention with a jazz-like approach to repertoire that treats each piece as a canvas for a unique, personal interpretation.

Founded in 2000 by composer/bassist Brian Coughlin, Fireworks was one of New York City’s first indie-classical bands. Fireworks burst onto the music scene with Coughlin’s rock-inspired version of Stravinsky’s orchestral masterpiece, The Rite of Spring. Called “adventurous and ahead of the curve,” “classically-trained but musically fearless,” and “the bridge between the contemporary classical new music ensemble and the mainstream popular audience,” Fireworks quickly drew the attention of critics and a national audience.

Ms. Silver has had the honor of touring with the Bob Hope USO Troupe as her way of giving back to our nation’s armed services fighting abroad. Her versatility as an actress has been seen during her many television appearances that included TV’s top shows.

But it is the stage that she loves best and the thrill of working in front of a live audience. Whether playing the prominent role of Diana Morales in “A Chorus Line”, singing for years for the Walt Disney Company or taking her act to sea performing on cruise ships, Deborah Silver brings an energy and talent that audiences applaud for over and over.

She can mesmerize her audiences with a sultry, slow ballad, or belt out a vocal range that physically defies the small package it’s coming from.

Handpicked for their voices, their dancing ability, their humor, their likeability, Horizon is a perfectly polished theatrical ensemble, complete with costuming and a worldclass instrumental ensemble. Their breathtaking a cappella singing, their supercharged dance routines, their engaging wit, and their obvious love for the music all combine to catapult Motown back to its glory days. Whether Horizon is singing the music of The Temptations, The Spinners, Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye, or Earth, Wind & Fire, it’s as if the original group has stopped by for a quick visit.

Audiences can’t help themselves. Before Horizon has finished, they are on their feet. They are dancing. They are singing. They are cheering. They have fallen captive to Horizon! The Legends Of Motown & More is a guaranteed winner for anyone who ever danced, or fell in love, to the magic of Motown.

Where: The Reserve Golf Club. The asphalt pavement allows for approximately 6′ x 6′ areas to work within. The space will be assigned depending on the number of participants working in the area. You do not have to fill the entire space but we do ask that at least a 4′ x 4′ section be completed.

When: The artists will be able to start at 9:00 am on Sunday and may work until 2:00 pm. Judging will then take place with the awards ceremony at 3:00 pm before the Bright Star Theatre’s performance. Chalking will be open to the public for viewing from 12:00-5:00 pm.

Awards: Best of Show ($500), People’s Choice ($300), 1st Place ($75), 2nd Place ($50) and 3rd Place ($25). Best of Show and People’s Choice may be awarded to the same artist.

Applications: Download the application here. Applications are due by September 1, 2012. Apply by mail only, no applications will be accepted online. Artists will be notified by mail and given further information. Applications will be accepted in the order received and a waiting list maintained.

Artwork: All artists must provide a sketch or photo of their proposed street painting image. If you are doing a reproduction (work of another artist) please submit a copy of the original image along with your sketch and credit the artist with name and title. Artwork must be appropriate for public viewing. No words or symbols intended as political statements or advertising, demonic images, logos or product advertising may appear within the image. Any inappropriate image can be removed at the discretion of the Festival. All images must be approved by the Pawleys Island Festival of Music and Art Visual Arts committee.

Materials: We will supply one box of pastels. Chalk and pastels are the only medium allowed for the festival. Additional chalk will be available through an exchange during the event. If you are using a predominant color in your design you may wish to purchase additional medium to ensure you have enough to complete your work.
