Helen played an important part of the band’s success, both on records and in personal appearances. Her hits “I Remember You”, “Tangerine” and others more took her to the top of the charts as well.

During the early fifties Jimmy was still a successful name in the business. Even with all of his success, he joined forces with his brother Tommy in 1953 to become the greatest band of all time!

With the untimely death of Tommy in 1956, Jimmy once again was left to carry on, but only for a short time as his own health was failing rapidly. In 1957 he left us with his last and greatest hit “So Rare” which topped the nation’s popularity charts.

The Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra has continued successfully for decades and is still in great demand all over the world. The past success of the Orchestra was due to the leadership of Lee Castle and more recently from 1990 through the new millennium, Jim Miller. The leadership has now passed to Bill Tole who will continue to bring joy to young and the “young at heart” as they enjoy the sounds of American Music – our history.

A native of California, Judy Carmichael moved to New York in the early 80’s and has maintained a busy concert schedule throughout the world ever since. She has toured for the United States Information Agency throughout India, Portugal, Brazil and Singapore. In 1992, Ms. Carmichael was the first jazz musician sponsored by the United States Government to tour China.

The musician that critics have referred to as “astounding, flawless and captivating” (The New York Times) has played in a variety of venues from Carnegie Hall, to the Peggy Guggenheim Museum in Venice (the first concert ever presented by the museum) to programs with Joel Grey, Michael Feinstein, Steve Ross and the Smothers Brothers. In addition, Ms. Carmichael has done comic skits and performed her music on radio and TV and performed private recitals for everyone from Rod Stewart and Robert Redford to President Clinton and Gianni Agnelli.

Judy Carmichael is one of a handful of musicians who approach jazz from a perspective of its entire history. Choosing to study jazz piano from its early roots on, she explores the music deeply, infusing it with a “fresh, dynamic interpretation of her own” (Washington Post ). The National Endowment for the Arts rewarded Carmichael’s knowledge of jazz piano with a major grant to present early jazz greats on film and to discuss the history and development of jazz piano with college students across the country.

Judy Carmichael’s Grammy-nominated recording “Two Handed Stride” teamed her with four giants of jazz from the Count Basie Orchestra, Red Callendar, Harold Jones, Freddie Green and Marshall Royal. She has written two books on stride piano and numerous articles on the subject of jazz. She has served on a variety of music panels at the National Endowment for the Arts and is one of the few jazz pianists honored as a Steinway Artist. She has been included in a number of jazz anthologies and at one point, to her utter surprise, turned up in the Simon and Schuster murder mystery Murder Times Two as “the stride pianist Judy Carmichael,” the main suspect’s favorite piano player.

Ms. Carmichael is included in “Who’s Who in the East,” “Who’s Who in Finance and Industry in America,” “Who’s Who in American Woman,” “American Women in Jazz,” “Who’s Who in the World” as well as the “Encyclopedia of Jazz.”

Ms. Carmichael has appeared frequently on Garrison Keillor’s A Prairie Home Companion, and has been featured on National Public Radio’s Morning Edition, Entertainment Tonight and CBS’ Sunday Morning with Charles Kuralt and recently with Charles Osgood. She is celebrating her 15th year producing and hosting her Public Radio Show Judy Carmichael’s Jazz Inspired, broadcast on over 170 stations throughout North America and abroad and on NPR NOW Channel 34 on Sirius/XM Satellite Radio.

As an increasingly sought-after teacher, he has been invited to give master-classes in a number of universities and conservatories in the USA, Uruguay and Argentina. He has started the guitar programs at the Carnegie Mellon Music Preparatory School in Pittsburgh and at the Charleston Academy of Music in Charleston, SC, where he currently serves as a faculty member.

Marco Sartor received degrees from the College of Charleston and Carnegie Mellon University. He studied with Robert Ravera, Mario Paysee and Eduardo Fernandez in Uruguay and Marc Regnier and James Ferla in the USA.

Current projects include the recording of his debut CD for the Fleur de Son label and upcoming performances with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and the SODRE Orchestra in Uruguay.

Early in life John made a decision to follow his dream of becoming a renowned guitarist, pianist, and singer. He made his dream a reality. He has formed bands playing psychedelic music, rhythm and blues, pop and jazz. John’s fingers just seem to glide effortlessly across the guitar strings as his audience watch in amazement.

John has spent his life traveling where his music leads him. He has performed at many concerts and major blues festivals throughout the United States and abroad, including the Savannah Music Festival, Lincoln Center Out-Of-Doors, Lucerne Blues Festival, and Switzerland’s Blues to Bop Festival, Australia’s Byron Bay Blues Festival, and many other festivals throughout the world.

John is very versatile. You never know what he’s going to play next. He seamlessly combines styles of gospel, blues, funk, country, jazz, and rhythm and blues. He has been active on tent revival circuits, played with LaFace Records of Atlanta, GA, and collaborated with several well-known artists throughout the world, including Taj Mahal, Kenny Wayne Shepard, BB King, Beverly Guitar Watkins, and the Stylistics. He has provided sound tracks for countless events. John was honored by Living Blues Magazine for two consecutive years as “Most Outstanding Guitarist.”

Taj Mahal has said that “Cool John Ferguson is among the five greatest guitarists in the world. He is a force to be reckoned with in the music industry. He is with the ranks of Jimi Hendrix, Wes Montgomery and Django Reinhart.”

John, a recording artist, has his own record label “Cool John Ferguson Records” and recently released a new CD entitled: “With These Hands.”

Following the early death of his stepfather, Steve rekindled his relationship with his father Mel, and soon realized they had a great deal in common besides a love for performing and various types of music. They also shared an avid interest in vintage planes, trains and automobiles.

In the late 1970′s, Steve recorded his first LP, Lucky, for United Artists Records, supporting it with a well received 20 city, national concert tour. Upon returning to California, he produced and sang on Liza Minnelli’s Columbia Records release Tropical Nights, which became a favorite of the New York dance clubs.

Honing his craft as a performer, Steve worked as an actor, playing the male lead in a mini-series for RAI (Italian) Television, and appeared on a number of variety television shows back home. He spent three years as the featured vocalist on ABC-TV’s $100,000 Name That Tune and also hosted two Los Angeles based television shows, Video 22 (a precursor to MTV) and Box Office America.

On the recommendation of Quincy Jones, Steve was tapped to be one of the three featured singers for the vocal group Full Swing, which had its debut release on Planet Records. After successful tours of the United States, Brazil and Japan, Steve left the group to focus on his solo career. The first project that came to fruition was his CD Swingin’ at the Blue Moon Bar & Grille, recorded in large part with a crackerjack, L.A. based big band. One of the highlights is a live duet between Steve and his dad Mel on Straighten Up and Fly Right, which showcases a very cool, improvised “scat” lesson between student and pupil. That disc was followed up by The Night I Fell For You, featuring an alluring arrangement of the Lerner & Loewe classic On the Street Where You Live and a number of Steve’s original tunes, many penned with longtime collaborator Steve Rawlins. In reviews of both CDs, critics singled out a number of these new songs as “contemporary yet timeless, combining a wry sense of humor and a natural feel for romance, with classic melodies.” Those two releases were followed up by The Essence of Love, which contains some of the most romantic, well crafted standards ever written, including Blue Skies, Stardust, Every Time We Say Goodbye and a playful duet with jazz icon Diane Schuur on The One I Love Belongs To Somebody Else. His current jazz CD, So Far, combines the most popular material from his first three CDs into one “best of” recording.

Steve has wooed audiences in every venue from intimate jazz clubs to Performing Arts Centers to festivals worldwide (Australia, England, Japan, Canada to name a few). A natural interest exists in hearing Steve sing the songs his dad was known for and because of this, in 2007 he did a 28 city, U.S. cross-country tour for Columbia Artists Mgt. Inc. (CAMI) entitled Tormé Sings Tormé. Steve is proud to have had the opportunity to pay tribute to his father. The show features a ten-piece band (dektette), extraordinary arrangements penned by Marty Paich exclusively for the Velvet Fog, and a multimedia presentation of never before seen photos and video clips of Steve and Mel singing together. A Hi-Def, 5.1 Surround Sound version of Tormé Sings Tormé was released on AIX Records. It won Best Music Dual Disc at the 2006 EMX DVD Awards Show in Los Angeles. Steve also performs a version of this show called Totally Tormé, in which he’s backed by a trio.

From Bernstein To The Beatles: Songs I Love To Sing is his symphony show, an eclectic, exciting evening that includes music from Rogers & Hammerstein, Stevie Wonder, Jerome Kern, Leonard Bernstein, the Gershwins and The Beatles to name a few.

He also performs his own show, which includes classic standards, original songs and personal stories from his never boring life.

Steve’s latest CD was just released this year (2009) and it’s entitled “inside/out”. It’s a set of twelve brand new, original tunes written entirely by Steve and is the first CD he’s recorded on which he not only sings but plays keyboards and guitar as well. “Inside/out” was written and recorded more in the “pop” vein that Steve was weaned on as a teenager and young adult and it’s now available on CDBaby.com, amazon.com and Steve’s website.

In addition to his performing and recording career, he’s also now hosting his own radio show every Wed. and Thurs. afternoon for two hours on the Music of Your Life network (www.musicofyourlife.com).

With a full, rich voice that’s been described as “seductive” and “effortless” and a natural ability to connect with audiences, Steve March Tormé is forging his own lasting path in the world of music.

Where: The circular driveway in front of the Litchfield Plantation Bed & Breakfast house. The asphalt pavement allows for approximately 6′ x 6′ areas to work within. The space will be assigned depending on the number of participants working in the area. You do not have to fill the entire space but we do ask that at least a 4′ x 4′ section be completed.

What: The Pawleys Island Festival of Music & Art is honored to offer a workshop for all participants to be held Friday, September 24, presented by professional Street Painter and Pastel Illustrator, Lee Jones. (Be sure to view her artwork at chalk-it-up.com.) Ms. Jones will provide a Power Point presentation and then offer a hands-on demonstration of Street Painting techniques. (Time of workshop to be determined.)

When: The artists will be able to start at 8:00 am on Saturday and may work until 2:30 pm. Judging will then take place with the awards ceremony at 3:00 pm.

Awards: Best of Show ($500), People’s Choice ($300), 1st Place ($75), 2nd Place ($50) and 3rd Place ($25). Best of Show and People’s Choice may be awarded to the same artist.

Artwork: All artists must provide a sketch or photo of their proposed street painting image. If you are doing a reproduction (work of another artist) please submit a copy of the original image along with your sketch and credit the artist with name and title. Artwork must be appropriate for public viewing. No words or symbols intended as political statements or advertising, demonic images, logos or product advertising may appear within the image. Any inappropriate image can be removed at the discretion of the Festival. All images must be approved by the Pawleys Island Festival of Music and Art Visual Arts committee.

Materials: We will supply one box of pastels. Chalk and pastels are the only medium allowed for the festival. Additional chalk will be available through an exchange during the event. If you are using a predominant color in your design you may wish to purchase additional medium to ensure you have enough to complete your work.
